Pro-Level Home Turf: The Custom Backyard Setup of Sam Burns

Sam Burns rose quickly on Tour after starting his pro career in his rookie year, 2017 and has continued improving each year. He’s collected multiple PGA Tour wins, including back-to-back Valspar Championship titles and early professional success on the Korn Ferry Tour — achievements that explain why on-course feel matters to him.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Putting green: 1,000 sq ft — GB177 (Golden Bear Putt), color 301
Lawn turf grass: 1,500 sq ft — 164SW, color 301
Sand bunker: 144 sq ft — Artificial turf topped with real sand
Total project: 2,644 sq ft
THE GREEN: GB177 GOLDEN BEAR PUTT
Sam opted for GB177 (color 301) for a practice green that reads like real greens. The short, dense pile gives authentic roll and uniform pace, so every stroke provides feedback. For a player who focuses on feel during downtime, that reliability counts.

THE BACKYARD LAWN: 164SW IN COLOR 301
The 1,500 sq ft lawn area uses 164SW in the same color to keep the look seamless from putting green to fringe. That space is perfect for warmups, pitch shots, family time, and retaining a clean look with easy maintenance.

THE BUNKER: REAL SAND OVER TURF
Instead of a fake sand look, Sam’s bunker has natural sand placed over artificial grass. That gives authentic bunker play while ensuring tidy transitions and easy maintenance around the green. It’s a great solution for anyone planning synthetic grass installation with extras.

THE BENEFITS OF THIS DESIGN
This setup blends practice with leisure play. A practice putting area lets Sam dial in speed and line. The urf lawn area provides controlled landing zones for shots and a place for relaxation and play. The sand trap delivers authentic bunker practice without the hassle of full-size bunker maintenance.
Sam’s Career Highlights: Sam claimed his first title at the 2018 Savannah Championship, birdying the last three holes to win, and later expanded his Tour success, including the Sanderson Farms and Valspar tournaments. He developed his skills at Louisiana State University before making it big on Tour.
